Students in grade ten study major turning points that shaped the modern
world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the
cause and course of the two world wars. They trace the rise of democratic
ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world
issues, especially as they pertain to international relations. They
extrapolate from the American experience that democratic ideals are often
achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced
everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world
issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic,
and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in
order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives. Success in the online environment requires the ability to manage time effectively and to work independently. Additionally, the capacity to follow guidelines and protocols achieves new importance in the absence of daily meetings and an onsite teacher.
NOTE: This course is open to Enrichment students only (no remedial).
Enrollment in this course requires students to attend an orientation. This
meeting is mandatory. Failure to attend will result in dismissal from the
course without assurance of a full or partial refund. We will schedule
three meetings to accommodate student schedules (they must attend only one);
these will be announced in April and scheduled before the full or partial
reimbursement deadline.
