Poetry Unit Assignments

Poetry Writing

Every student will write at least TEN original poems. The poems need titles, good spelling, to be aesthetically appealing and should conform to the following guidelines:

Write a poem on each of the following themes. Each poem MUST be at least 70 words in length (unless noted otherwise).

1. Valentine’s poem (due Feb. 15 – The poem must be appropriately decorated! Oral presentation.)

2. school/education (due Feb. 22)

3. teens (March 2)

4. issue (political, environmental, economic, etc.) (March 10)

5. family (March 16)

6, 7, 8 themes of your choice

9. poem imitation or parody of one of the poems in your text

10. Poem-for-the-eye

Poems are due in a notebook at the end of the unit (unless noted otherwise). For extra credit, write more poems.

Media Project

Present a poem in a medium other than writing. Thus you may use Power Point, web page, hypertext, poster, video, audio, slides, cassette tape, photographs, magazines, etc. You will be presenting your project orally. You may use a favorite poem or one of your own originals.
