Background

Tennessee Williams was born in Mississippi and lived in New Orleans as a boy. His culture was the South and his plays depicted his cultural heritage. Traditional Southern culture was in  decay, perhaps you will be able to pick up on this motif as we  read the play.

by Tennessee Williams

This classic American play is about the failure of attainment. The American Dream is a myth for the characters in this play. People fail to attain their dreams for many, many reasons. This play explores several of these reasons. The tragic figure of Laura is perhaps overshadowed by the other hapless figures in the play.
